Expert Q&A

By Randy Morris
Board Certified Reproductive Endocrinologist, Chicago

My wife and I just finished our second IVF and found out last Friday she is pregnant. I am wondering about the HCG level. They put back four embryos. On 13dpt, 3dt, her HCG level was 640, and it was checked again three days later and it was 2504. We go in two weeks for our first ultrasound. Are these high HCG levels a good sign of multiples? Thanks.?

First of all, there are very very few situations where it is appropriate to put four embryos back into the uterus. Secondly, if her hCG level is already over 2000, there is no reason to have to wait two weeks to perform the ultrasound – you should be able to have it now. Finally, there is a large amount of overlap with hCG levels between singletons and multiples, making it hazardous to predict. However, quadrupling in three days after putting back that many embryos would make me think that multiples are a good bet.
