Expert Q&A

By Traci Kurtzer
Obstetrician and Gynecologist

On my 10th week I went for an ultrasound with an OB. She said that I have a single and everything is fine and normal. Ten days later, I had a little vaginal bleeding after intercourse. Then I went to a checkup immediately with another OB. She again took an ultrasound and said that I have two sacs: one empty and another active fetus. She had asked for another ultrasound in another 12 days. Is there any chance that I'm developing another baby after I developed my first baby? We were constantly involved in sex after my conception with the first baby.?

It is more likely that you originally conceived twins, but the one sac was not visible with your initial ultrasound, as the fetus was not really developing (a blighted ovum). Women can conceive twins from different episodes of intercourse that fertilize two eggs. These eggs would be released at the same ovulation time, so they would at most be days apart in size, and that would not explain the distinct difference in the development/size of what you have described. I suspect that at your follow-up ultrasound, the one sac without a fetus will be smaller or gone.
