Expert Q&A

By Traci Kurtzer
Obstetrician and Gynecologist

I was diagnosed through ultrasound as being pregnant with twins at 11 1/2 weeks, with both twins having a strong heartbeat. Now that I've researched twins, I'm reading more and more about vanishing twin syndrome but with little concrete information to go on. To say the least, it has me very apprehensive about my pregnancy. Is it common for the vanishing twin syndrome to occur at 11 1/2 weeks when a strong heartbeat was detected for both babies? Or is this syndrome more common in ultrasound diagnosis at 6 weeks and earlier? I've gotten conflicting information.?

The vanishing twin syndrome would not be likely after getting to almost 12 weeks with heartbeats in both fetuses. It is more common in the first trimester. I'm sure your doctor will be getting regular ultrasounds on you to monitor the growth and development of your babies and to put your mind at ease.
