Expert Q&A

By Traci Kurtzer
Obstetrician and Gynecologist

I am 30 weeks pregnant with twins, and I have just been put on bed rest. Are there any statistics that say when most twins are delivered?

The average gestation period for twins is felt to be shorter than for singleton pregnancies. Whereas average gestation is 40 weeks for singles, twins tend to average two to three weeks earlier. Bed rest may not help with preterm labor risk for singleton pregnancies, but there is evidence that it can help with prolongation of a twin pregnancy if you are having signs of premature cervical dilation or cervical shortening. Prophylactic bed rest for a patient with twins who is asymptomatic is of questionable value, however.
