Expert Q&A

By Traci Kurtzer
Obstetrician and Gynecologist

I'm 19 weeks pregnant with twins and am hoping to carry them to full term. But just for peace of mind, at what stage are they likely to be able to survive outside the womb if there are any complications?

Fetal survival outside the womb is possible after 24 weeks, for both singletons and twins. Of course, that is not without significant medical interventions and continued risks of death from infection, respiratory or other complications. Even with survival at that early gestational age, poor growth and developmental problems can result.
