Expert Q&A

By Lawrence B. Werlin

What is my percentage rate for having twins if I am taking Clomid and am 36 years old? Also, I understand that more than one pregnancy can also increase your chances. I've had two miscarriages. Do they count? Or is it actual full-term pregnancies that count?

Typically the incidence of multiple pregnancy utilizing clomiphene is about 5 percent. The vast majority of these multiples are twins. Regardless of the number of pregnancies, the chance of spontaneous (without ovulation induction medications) twins is 3 percent.

With respect to your previous history of two miscarriages, I would recommend that perhaps you have a consultation with a reproductive endocrinologist, who may want to do an evaluation for recurrent pregnancy loss, before you utilize ovulation induction medications.
