Expert Q&A

By Lawrence B. Werlin
Fertility Specialist

I have a daughter who is 3 1/2 years of age. I would like to try for another baby, but my husband and I wish to have twins, and if possible, boys. Can you suggest any important tips on this subject? Could you suggest some Web sites on this subject?

There is no guarantee that, even with various ovulation induction medications, that you could successfully conceive with twins. Although this is an option for you to consider the empiric use of these medications, they are not without risk and should be used only under your physician's supervision.

There are various techniques to try and isolate only male sperm. Male sperm typically swim faster, but die more quickly than female sperm. Thus, if you were trying to have a male, you would have intercourse as close to ovulation as possible to encourage the male sperm to be first to fertilize the egg. There are also laboratory techniques that can separate male and female sperm, and the best site for you to go to would be Genetics & IVF Institute in Fairfax, Va.
