Expert Q&A

By David L. Fay, M.D.
Family Physician
Associate Director, Waukesha Family Practice Residency Program

Does conceiving one set of twins increase a mother's chance of having a second set of twins?

I can find nothing in the literature to support the contention that women who have had twins are more likely to have a second set, although I have seen some anecdotal reports that this is the case. We do know that monozygotic (identical) twins are not familial, but that dizygotic (fraternal) twins are. Twins are more common in subsequent pregnancies and in women who conceive when they are older.
