Expert Q&A

By Randy Morris
Board Certified Reproductive Endocrinologist, Chicago

While twins are not a high occurrence on my side of the family, my husband's father is an identical twin (and my husband looks just like him). My husband and I are trying to conceive for the first time, and I was wondering if there is any likelihood that we could have twins? My husband's sister has three children, no twins. I have been told twins can skip a generation, but can a male carry the gene to produce twins, or does it have the be the woman?

In general, when there is a family history of twins, your chances are increased. The chance is higher when the family history is yours, but there is still an effect from the male's side of the family.
