Expert Q&A

By Traci Kurtzer
Obstetrician and Gynecologist

I had a 32-hour natural labor and delivery of twins 16 months ago. The labor stalled at 8 centimeters as the first twin was posterior, sideways. After the birth I noticed my vaginal wall was flat at my vaginal opening – no longer a hole there. My OB said that it was probably a rectocele. She said the ligaments were stretched out, and it should get better when I wean (still have not weaned).

Well, it seems to be worse. My cervix recently has been as low as at my vaginal opening. I feel a heaviness in my pelvic cavity, and now fear that I'm going to have a prolapse. What can I do? I have not been regularly doing Kegels, but would they even help at this point?

Kegels can certainly help things from getting worse. You are still at risk for prolapse (when the uterus and cervix fall into and out of the vagina). One option would be a pessary to hold the cervix up higher. Otherwise you're looking at surgery.
