Expert Q&A

By John Dorsey, M.D.
Pediatrician

I have twin girls and they are 3 months. Recently one of them has become so fussy that I am starting to think she is colicky. I know it says that it ends about 3 months, but she has all the symptoms of colic. She cries for no reason almost everyday about the same time every day for the past two weeks. It's a different cry than her hungry or upset cry. About the same time she is crying I notice she passes gas. Any information will help. Thanks.?

I agree that the fussiness of your 3-month-old is probably not colic. It would be very rare. What you are describing sounds a lot like gastro-esophageal reflux disease or GERD. It's a condition where the digestive acids creep back up the esophagus and irritate the lining. In a tiny baby, this can bring about the same symptoms as you are describing. It's nothing to be alarmed about, but you might want to ask your pediatrician about it on the next scheduled visit.
