The Benefits of Music for You and Your Preterm Infant

Parents interested in using music to help their babies while in the hospital should speak with hospital staff. Schreibman, however, points out that most hospitals do not have music therapists on staff. Instead, she encourages parents to educate themselves about the benefits of music and techniques of music therapy. Hospitals and parents wishing to involve certified music therapists in their children's care can contact the American Music Therapy Association for therapists in their area.
"I believe most hospitals would be willing to entertain the idea of music therapy, because it has been a successful, non-invasive intervention," Schreibman says. "It can lead to shorter hospital stays for some patients."
"There are clear limits to the bio-medical paradigm, and thanks to modern neuroscience, we are experiencing an imminent emergence of a bio-psycho-social paradigm where modern psychology and sociology will play an increasing role in the next phase of medical progress," Dr. Lippin says. "The use of music as a therapeutic intervention is a logical extension."
For parents who note each physical progression of their premature infants, music is all the more effective as a therapeutic tool. For others, it is a way to be part of something that calms and soothes their vulnerable babies. "Did I see scientific proof that it helped? I don't know," Kent says. "But it helped us help them.
