PPD After Delivering Twins
Multiples and Postpartum Depression
By Teri Brown
Fry credits joining a multiples club with helping her overcome PPD. With twins that were 8 months old at the time, Fry wasn't sure if she could fit one more thing into her life, but she has never regretted the decision. "The other people in the club were a lifesaver for me, and I could never replace that type of support," says Fry. "It helped to know that others were as overwhelmed as I was and that they had bad days, too. "
The club also gave Fry's family of three a place to go to for fun social events like park play dates and family picnics. She was able to bounce ideas off of others who understood her challenges as a single parent.
Fry's advice for mothers of multiples who may be suffering from PPD is to be honest with doctors and with themselves. "If I had been more honest with my doctor, he would have diagnosed the condition sooner and I probably would have been put on the antidepressants sooner," says Fry.
She also advises asking for help when you need it so you can get enough sleep. "It is really, really hard to be the sole caregiver for two babies at the same time," says Fry. "This applies to married women who don't have the help at home that they need and not just single parents."
Multiple babies multiply both the challenges and the joys of parenthood. They can also multiply the chances of getting PPD, which can be a debilitating and even deadly condition. But with support, understanding and assistance, PPD can become a part of the past, allowing mothers of multiples the chance to enjoy future joys with their babies.
