Striving for a Healthy Pregnancy
Prenatal Care for Moms of MultiplesBy Lisa Marie Metzler
In most cases, it is considered safe to exercise during a portion of your pregnancy with the usual precautions. "Specifically, women should not get overheated, nor start a new exercise program after they become pregnant," says Dr. Khalil Tabsh, medical director of the perinatal center at Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center and a clinical professor of obstetrics at the UCLA School of Medicine. However, it is best to discuss any exercise regime with your obstetrician first. Easy-paced walking three times a week or swimming may be a healthy alternative to an otherwise high-impact cardio workout. Dr. Tabsh generally recommends that patients expecting twins discontinue exercise programs at 24 weeks, and those expecting triplets stop at 20 weeks. |
