Deployed During the Holidays
Surviving the Holiday Season When a Loved One Is Away
By Gwen Morrison
– Encourage your children and spouse to send letters, photos and audio or video messages to one another. If you have frequent access to computers, get e-mail addresses free of charge and correspond regularly online.
"I think it's important to remember why we are celebrating the holiday and try not to get so caught up in the details that we lose sight of what each holiday is about," says Counts-Jenkins. "It's so easy to stress yourself out, because as mothers we feel responsible for providing the 'best ever' celebration for our children. When I reflect about what I remember about my holidays as a child, it's that they were spent with family. That's what's really important."
Be present with the family members that are at home. Though you will all miss the loved one who is away, it is important to create special memories for the people in your family who are sharing in the season. Create new memories, and take lots of pictures so you can share them when your loved one comes home.
