The Best Toys for Infants up to 6 Months

All babies have two things in common: drooling and putting everything into their mouths. That combined with common household germs and dirt means toys need to be cleaned often. "Toys may be swished through a safe cleaning solution and thoroughly rinsed and dried," says Dr. Honig.

And consider plastic over wood. "Wooden surfaces will shed germs faster than plastic surfaces," says Dr. Honig.

Keeping Bathtub Toys Clean

  • Rinse toys each night after use and let them air dry. Many bacteria that thrive on wet surfaces actually die once the surface is dry.
  • Put the bath toys in the dishwasher and run them through a normal cycle with soap once a week (more often if you like).
  • Every two weeks, clean bath toys with bleach. Use one tablespoon of liquid bleach per gallon of water. Soak the toys for about two minutes, then air dry without rinsing them.
  • If you have squeaking or squirting toys with holes, squeeze the bleach solution out of them several times, then rinse with water. Be sure you rinse well so your child does not get the solution in her mouth during her next bath.
  • Avoid using porous toys in the bath, such as wooden and spongy toys.
