Choosing the Best Formula

Packaging
Once you decide on a formula, you need to choose the type of packaging that will work best for you. Infant formulas come in three forms: powder, liquid and ready to feed. Each has its pros and cons, but the end product is the same.

Powder:
The formula comes in a resealable tin with a measuring scoop inside. The proper amount of powder is mixed with tap or bottled water before serving. Powdered formula is the most cost effective and is good for mixing one bottle at a time. It's easy to prepare, but doesn't blend as quickly as liquid.

Concentrated Liquid:
The formula is mixed with tap or bottled water before serving. It comes in small cans and works well when making several bottles at once. Concentrated liquid formula is more economical than ready to feed, but a bit more expensive than powder.

Ready to Feed:
The formula requires no mixing or preparation of any kind - no water is needed. You just pour the formula from the can into a bottle and serve. Ready to feed formula is very convenient for travel, day care, if safe drinking water is not available or if you run out of formula away from home. This is the easiest type of formula available, but it is the most expensive.

Dr. Sinh-Dang stresses that proper preparation and storage of infant formula is essential. Read any and all instructions carefully before preparing your first bottle. Most companies include a toll-free number on the product, so be sure to call if you have any questions.
