Monster's Who's Who
A New Father Reflects on His First Halloween
By Mark Stackpole
www.graphics.iparenting.com/clipart/seasonal/sea092.jpg" width=250 height=250 align=left>Unaware of her unbearable cuteness while wearing the costume, Corinne is most interested in pulling on the bulbs at the end of her antennae. Who knows if she pulls on them hard enough, and flaps her little honeybee wings, she might be able to lift off the ground. That would be cool, except for the fact that I would have to baby-proof stuff even on the high shelves. And having a flying baby lands me back at Twilight Zone High, so we'll just have to settle for that unbearable cuteness thing. Good enough for me.
Someday, however, I do hope to be using spirit gum to apply horror movie prosthetics to her face. That day may well never come, and I know that it's far more likely that she would rather be a Disney princess or Barbie than a Zombie Queen. That's OK, I guess. But if she's going to be Barbie, can't she at least be Vampire Barbie? Barbie from the Black Lagoon? The Barbie of Frankenstein? I'm hoping that she'll at least be willing to work with me.
On October 31, I'll be putting in my vampire teeth and contact lenses and carting around a chubby little cubby all stuffed with fluff. For the first time ever, we will roam the night together, with all of the other cuties and creepies decked out in their annual disguises. Halloween traditions have existed for centuries, and this year, we get to add our own tiny piece of lore. Our Halloween tradition begins here and now. For the first time since I can remember, Halloween is new and uncharted territory for me, because I am sharing it with a little girl for whom everything is fairly new and uncharted.
Old maps used to warn travelers about such uncharted territory: "Here there be monsters." I certainly hope so. After all, some of my best friends are monsters. Maybe some of hers will be, too.
