Low Birth Weight Babies
Causes, Concerns and Outcomes
By Kelly Burgess
In other words, while these young adults, who were extremely low birth weight, had various disabilities and developmental issues, they valued their health-related quality of life no different from young adults born with normal birth weight.
The lead author of the study, Dr. Saroj Saigal, professor of pediatrics in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, who had followed these young adults from birth, says while many factors impact on quality of life, they restricted the definition to health-related quality of life. However, Dr. Saigal cautions that this study may not be generalizable to other populations because not all societies have access to universal health care and lifelong social support of persons with disabilities, both of which the Canadian government provides.
However, Dr. Saigal points to a study published in 2002 by Maureen Hack from Cleveland, Ohio, that also showed fairly good outcomes at young adulthood despite an underprivileged population.
"My take home message to parents is that even though many of these children may have significant problems, there are a lot of positive aspects in the long run," Dr. Saigal says. "These children continue to improve even into adulthood, and most become self-supporting as young adults, including a significant proportion of those with long-term disabilities."
