Discomfort Times Two

How Can You Get Relief When Carrying Twins?

By Kelly Burgess

Lage learned early on not to put herself in situations that made her uncomfortable. "For me riding in cars was torture, so I wouldn't plan a car trip during my pregnancy," she says. "If you can put something off you know is going to cause you discomfort it will minimize stress."

Listen to Your Body
Dr. Eileen Pearlman, director of Twinsight, says she's seen many cases of preterm twin pregnancies where the mother has said that she thought something was wrong in the pregnancy, but then just ignored the symptoms until it was too late.

"If you have new aches and pains, even if it's just a more severe backache or a weird feeling, contact your doctor," Dr. Pearlman says. "That's what the doctor is there for, and it's much better to be safe than sorry."

Dr. Pearlman also notes that many women with twin or multiple pregnancies ultimately end up on bed rest and suggests an organization called Sidelines that will hook you up with others in your situation as well as offer general support.

Similarly, Lage says it's important to never just resign yourself to the fact that you're going to be uncomfortable and there's nothing you can do about it. Instead, contact the local mothers of multiples group, or go online and find forums for pregnant mothers of multiples. And don't be afraid to talk to your doctor about finding relief.
