How Can You Get Relief When Carrying Twins?

By Kelly Burgess

"It sounds a little strange, but it would give me some relief for two to three minutes, and sometimes that was the only relief I could get," Lage says.

Taking It Lying Down
Dr. Luke says one of the hardest things she's seen for women who are pregnant with multiples is in just letting go and altering the pace of life. It's especially hard if you have friends who are going through a singleton pregnancy, or if you've had a previous singleton pregnancy and expect to carry on the same way. The reality of the situation is that a multiple pregnancy has a much higher risk of preterm labor, and it's important to change your lifestyle to minimize both physical and mental stress. One way to do that is to just lie down.

"Studies show a strong connection between fatigue and preterm labor," Dr. Luke says. "Lying down, on the other hand, decreases the catecholamines that can trigger uterine contractions. A prone position also improves circulation to the kidneys, thus helping to eliminate excess fluids.

However, says Dr. Luke, don't wait until you're exhausted to lie down. Schedule horizontal time into your day. Also, don't let anyone else make you feel as if you should be doing something you don't want to.
