How Can You Get Relief When Carrying Twins?

  • Limit standing to no more than two hours a day.
  • Sit in a supportive chair with a straight back and elevate legs.
  • Check your mattress for firmness.
  • Try a gentle massage.
  • Wear a supportive maternity garment for both belly and breasts.
  • Take a warm, not hot, bath.
  • Side Aches
    • Use pillows for support when lying down.
    • Take a warm bath.
  • Swelling
    • Lie down as often as possible.
    • Wear wrist splints for swelling in the arms.
    • Cut back on carbs, drink plenty of water.
  • Heartburn
    • Try to sleep in a more upright position.
    • Eat smaller, more frequent meals.
    • Avoid eating right before bedtime.
  • Shortness of Breath
    • Try sleeping in a semi-seated position.
    • Use pillows for support.
  • Overheating
    • Dress in layers.
    • Drink plenty of water.
    • To avoid thermostat arguments, use an electric blanket with dual controls.
  • Sleep Difficulties
    • Try using pillows of different shapes and firmness.
    • Sleep whenever possible, even if it's just catnaps throughout the day and night.
  • Cheryl Lage of Richmond, Va., used a number of those strategies when she was pregnant with her fraternal twins, Darren and Sarah, including sleeping with "about seven pillows." However, her favorite form of relief for her aching back and sides was to simply bend over her kitchen counter, head on her folded arms, and just let her belly hang.
