Car Seat Confinement

How Long Is Too Long in a Car Seat?

By Lisa A. Goldstein

For the first month of their lives, the Gloekler children of Hixon, Tenn., slept in their car seats because they were contained, safe, in a rockable apparatus and easy to separate should one become disruptive to the point of waking the other. Michael and Julia are twins, and this practice was recommended to their parents by other parents of multiples.

"Once we got a handle on our new lives – no longer afraid of 'breaking' one of them and finding out how to soothe them – we transitioned them into a co-sleeper," says Mike Gloekler. Born five weeks early, and now 6 1/2 months old, the twins are in their own cribs in a shared nursery and sleep through the night most of the time. "As far as development goes, their pediatrician noted at their 4-month-old appointment that he would no longer be able to distinguish them from other babies who were not early nor were not twins," he adds.

Even though his children seemed quite comfortable, Gloekler says he and his wife still felt they were doing something they shouldn't. "I think it stems from the traditional presumption that Baby comes home, Baby sleeps in a crib or bassinet," he says.

Gloekler also had some concern over comfort but says his children really did fine. They were well-padded and protected from loose objects. Would he recommend this practice to others with multiples? "At least until you can get a handle on life with more than one newborn," he says.
