(HarperCollins, 2000). "Some twin pairs have a closer bond, while others are not as close. But there is a bond that is usually there."

With boy/girl twins, even before they hit preschool they have shared a lot of life experiences together, says Pearlman. "They play together, and if they are in the same room, they are the first person each sees in the morning and the last they see at night," she says. "There is this closeness, this history that goes on with them. They may grow apart as they get older, but there is this initial attachment."

Preparing for Pink and Blue
When two heartbeats are spotted on the ultrasound, joy is often followed by worry. There are so many things to think about, and while health concerns are paramount, most parents have logistical worries, too. How can you afford two of everything? How will you fit double the baby gear into your house? And if you are having boy/girl twins, will sharing be an option?

Elizabeth Lyons, author of Ready or Not ... Here We Come! The REAL Experts' Cannot-Live-Without Guide to the First Year With Twins (Finn-Phyllis Press, 2003), agrees. "As far as items like diapers, toys and baby gear go there really won't be any gender-specific baby needs," she says. "Most items can be shard." (Although it will obviously be necessary to double up on some larger items, such as child safety seats.)
