Watching their child delicately put on and take off small stuffed and plastic ornaments, the couple stumbled upon an activity to which their entire family looks forward. "My sisters have started versions of these trees with their children as well," says Derby.

Offering your child an array of rattles, bows and child-safe ornaments, you can redirect your child from pulling ornaments off a life-size tree by giving your toddler the chance to decorate his own tree. With proper adult supervision, children also can enjoy some safe but festive alternatives to typical holiday decorations.

Tom Tait, a fire chief in Cazenovia, N.Y., suggests parents offer electric candles and festive night lights as an option for holiday decorating. "Young children can 'help' you flip the light switch and watch the flicker of the light with you," he says. "This simple alternative will reduce the risk of an accidental fire or injury."
