Robin Hanley, a Canadian mother of three, started "trading time" with other new moms soon after her kids were born. "I'd drop off the kids at a friend's place so I could go exercise," she says. "Then, on a different day, I'd return the favor. Eventually we had a little network going, which allowed each of us to enjoy some personal time without having to worry that our kids weren't being properly looked after."

The system became so effective, Hanley ultimately turned it into a daycare service. "Now I have kids dropped off at my place before lunch, after lunch or after school," she says. "I do various things with them, from arts and crafts to helping with homework. It's deeply gratifying, since, having gone through it myself, I know how much other moms appreciate that precious time to use for themselves."

Write It Down
While certain aspects of parenting are universal, everyone's experience with it is different. And there is of course no better source of knowledge or insight when it comes to parenting than parents themselves. It is for this reason that a number of moms often feel compelled to write about their experiences and, sometimes, to disseminate these thoughts – a gesture proving extremely helpful to others who are about to embark on the same voyage.

When her sons were babies, Toronto mom Elisa Garay found a number of her peers were asking about how to find a good nanny. Elisa and a friend started recording some information about the subject, which eventually became the book, Nannyhood
