Peer-to-Peer

Brown University Sophomore Allison Lombardo is the author of Navigating Your Freshman Year. Here is what she has to say about being homesick, living with roommates, money management and goal setting.

  • Feeling Homesick: Call your family. Call some friends. Don't feel like a baby. Everyone feels this way, even seniors. Distract yourself with something else and don't dwell on it.
  • Living With Roommates: Step back and make sure you are just not having a bad day or being inconsiderate. Think of compromises you both can make, such as altering your bedtime, new ground rules or just try to talk out what's bothering you. Mediation by an outside source is a good option, too. Getting to know and live with someone different from you can be a great experience, whether you become best friends or not.
  • Money Management: Eating out and buying new clothes are extras that add up. After the first few months, you'll be able to figure out what is essential and what is expendable and set your budget according to your priorities.
  • Goal Setting: Make it a priority to take care of your health and stress level. Strive to eat well and continuing exercising. Set a goal of getting to know a professor well. Prioritize both having fun and studying hard and strive for balance in it.
